1) Who needs to take the exam?

Starting from January 1, 2025, requirements tightened. You must pass this exam if:

You are a non-EU citizen applying for a Settlement Permit (Permanent Residence).
You are applying for Hungarian Citizenship via naturalization.
Exemptions: Those with a Hungarian university degree or those over 65 (rules vary; confirm with the latest OIF factsheet).

The "Short Answer" era: Older guides focus on multiple-choice, but recent exams contain far more open-ended questions.
Language barrier: The exam is strictly in Hungarian. You must write names of kings, poets, events with readable spelling.
Passing score: 12 questions, 30 points max. You need 16 points. One blank short answer can cost 3–4 points.

History: From the Conquest (Honfoglalás) to the 1956 Revolution; know St. Stephen and Mátyás Király.
Geography: Major rivers (Danube, Tisza), mountains (Kékes), neighboring countries.
Literature: Himnusz, Szózat, and the “Big Three” (Petőfi, Arany, Ady).
Art & Music: Erkel, Liszt, Bartók, Munkácsy.
Constitutional basics: Fundamental Law, President’s role, Parliament structure.
Holidays & traditions: August 20, March 15, October 23.

Environment: Budapest Metropolitan Government Office on Váci út; arrive 20 minutes early.
Handwriting matters: If they can’t read “Szent István”, they can’t give points.
No electronics: Strictly enforced.
